"Labor costs continue to rise for vineyards and shortage of reliable
workers continues to be a challenge. As well, laborers are at risk for
acute injuries while pruning and long-term repetitive strain injuries. A
desire to increase productivity and reduce operating costs in a
competitive market has lead growers to look a bit more carefully toward
the prospect of mechanized and semi-mechanized pruning and thinning
Orchard Master Tools and Equipment sells two styles of quality-built lithium battery powered electric pruners well suited to the orchard, vineyard, or nursery. One model is designed mainly for use in the vineyard, the other has a detachable extension wand to allow pruning in the orchard. The hand units are strong yet light. and the battery backpack is comfortable for use all day. These pruners produce uniform, powerful cuts that leave smooth clean edges that heal rapidly - even on large diameter branches and grape vines. If you need to manage your labor costs, consider our portable, electronic pruners. They will save you time and money while reducing your risk for serious repetitive-use injuries and associated labor and industry liabilities.
Pictured above is the "Vineyard Pruner" We call it the Vineyard Pruner because it it is designed solely for hand held use and is therefore more suitable for use in the vineyard. It is not compatible with the extension pole included in the Orchard Pruning Kit.

This is named the Orchard & Vineyard Pruner. It is perfect for high-density systems and allows for most pruning to be performed from the ground. We use these exclusively on our tall spindle system and they work great! This model is designed to be used as either a hand held pruner suitable for use in the vineyard, or it can be used with an extension pole to prune taller trees in the orchard. The hand unit is very sturdy but light enough for use with the extension pole.
There are three option for use. One is to use the pruner seperately. The second is to use the pruner with the handle. This gives a length of 40 inches. The third option is to use the center extension pole for a total length 82 inches.
The trigger mechanism is non-progressive. Actuation of the trigger completely closes the blade against the anvil. The blade can also be locked closed for safety or transport by one continuous squeeze of the trigger. The blade can later be unlocked with two quick trigger activations. Additionally, the blade can be set to remain fully open, or half-way to allow for quicker cycling times when pruning smaller wood.
The 300W/36 Volt lithium battery is powerful and durable. It charges quickly, works all day and is estimated to handle 800 to 1000 recharges.
What are the benefits of our electronic pruners?
Efficiency: Electronic pruners are considerably more efficient
than manual pruners. You may be able to cut pruning time by 20 to 40
percent-especially later in the day. Hand fatigue after several hours
can cause workers who use manual pruners to
make slower, ragged cuts. These electronic pruners provide a smooth
clean cut all day long.
Profitability: Although electronic pruners have a higher up front
cost than manual pruners,
they can easily pay for themselves in certain situations. If your
operation requires extensive pruning, you will recover your initial
investment costs quickly-especially if you can avoid labor and industry
We use these on our own apple and pear orchard and in our grape vineyard.
The ergonomic design may help prevent repetitive use injuries associated
with heavy pruning. Anyone who owns or operates an orchard, vineyard or
nursery, should be concerned about limiting time loss to injuries and
associated labor and industries liabilities in the orchard. Investigate
the cost savings associated with increased efficiency in the field as
well as the benefit of limiting associated labor and industries injuries
and you’ll see that our electronic pruners pay for themselves very
quickly. Check our “links” section to view a selection of trade-magazine articles and government studies.
